Group by Artboard ✦ Adobe Illustrator Script

Group the artwork on every artboard in one click. Run the script and each artboard's objects are wrapped in their own group, named after that artboard. No dialogs, no settings.

What it does

  • Finds which artboard each object sits on and groups the objects on each artboard separately

  • Names every group after its artboard, so your Layers panel reads "Artboard 1," "Artboard 2," and so on

  • If an object overlaps two artboards, it goes to the one it overlaps most, so nothing is grouped twice

  • Keeps your stacking order exactly as it was

  • Skips locked items, hidden items, hidden layers, and guides

  • Ignores anything sitting off the artboards on the pasteboard

  • Selects the new groups when it finishes

  • Safe to run again: an artboard that already holds a single group is left alone, not wrapped a second time

How to use

  1. Open your multi-artboard document

  2. Run the script from File > Scripts > Other Script (or drop it into your Illustrator Scripts folder)

  3. Each artboard now has its own group

Perfect for

  • Exporting or moving artboard content as a single unit

  • Cleaning up large multi-artboard files such as icon sets, social media packs, and mockup sheets

  • Preparing files for handoff, where artboard content needs to be grouped and labeled

  • Combining with other scripts that work on whole groups, such as scaling or aligning

Good to know
Artwork on one artboard that sits on different layers ends up in a single group, placed in the layer of the front-most object. Locked or hidden items are left ungrouped, and the script tells you how many it skipped.

⚡ One Script. Save hours.
